The 13th Doctor

So, I've decided to have a go at making a blog. I guess we'll see how it goes, haha.

The first thing I thought I'd talk about is the 13th Doctor.

There has obviously been a lot of controversy since Jodie Whittaker was announced to be playing the part on the 16th July 2017.

There was a mixture of positive and negative feelings amongst fans. I personally don't want to make a judgement on her casting before we actually see her on-screen.

The idea of The Doctor being able to regenerate into a woman, I believe, has been around for a long time, possibly since the 4th Doctor's era or before. However, the point has been reintroduced recently with Missy having regenerated from The Master as well as The General regenerating into a woman in Series 9's finale, Hell Bent.

Moving on, the 13th Doctor's costume was revealed on the 9th November 2017.

Having been designed by Ray Holman, who designed the 11th Doctor's (Matt Smith's) first costume for Series 5 as well as the 12th Doctor's (Peter Capaldi's) costume for Series 9, it has a similar feel in some ways.
A lot of people have mentioned how she has braces like the 11th Doctor but, having only watched a handful or so of classic episodes, even I can say that Doctors before 11 have worn braces. This includes the 2nd Doctor as well as the 5th, 6th, 7th and unknown till recently, the 12th.

12's braces are from Topman: Black and Grey Stripe Braces. Personally, £18 is a little steep for some braces but for cosplayers, it's a good screen accurate item.

Moving on from her yellow braces, she's wearing some baggy blue trousers along with some blue socks with white stripes. Over these she is wearing some boots, something Doctor's seem to have been wearing a lot recently (11 and 12) but that's understandable, both for the character and for working on set.

Her T-shirt features a stripy design, calling back to the 4th Doctor's iconic scarf. Her long coat also appears to feature this or a similar stripe design. It also appears that she has a white undershirt which can be seen slightly in the official photo but also in the image below (taken by a member of the crew).

UPDATE (August 2018): Looking at marketing material and the Character 10" doll, it looks as if the white undershirt is long sleeve.

More on the coat, it appears to possibly have a hood but I'm not sure. The trim on the pockets and cuffs/sleeves feature a bold/contrasting colour, much like one of the 4th Doctor's coats as well as the 5th Doctor's. I heard somewhere, although I've unfortunately forgotten where, that the coat is actually a sky blue colour.

Finally, she has 2 earrings in her ear. 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom (I'm not an ear expert, sorry, haha). We can't see if she has any in her other ear.

When I first saw the costume, I was a bit unsure. However, I now think it's grown on me, it's interesting but simple. I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks in action.

All the blue in her costume really makes you think of the TARDIS. Speaking of which, another thing to take from the image is the new TARDIS! There are quite a few changes from 12's TARDIS while also keeping a similar style to the other new series boxes.

The box features a few changes that make it look more like an original police box:

Original Metropolitan Police Box

This includes adding a thicker border on the sides of the Police Box signs, much like how most of the classic series boxes were. The 'Pull To Open' door has also been switched around, as in, the hinges and handle have swapped sides so it opens the other way. The sign also now has a black background with white text, much like the 4th Doctor's TARDIS.

On the other door, we've lost the St. John Ambulance sign and the handle on the door has changed, it is much lower down and is situated below the lock instead of above it. The windows also have a warm glow, much like how 9 and 10's did.

It's hard to tell from the 1 picture but the size of the box seems to be around the same as the other new series boxes. It's also hard to tell but it's possible that the roof is much flatter, either having only a slight pitch or being completely flat.

I quite like this new TARDIS design, it looks a bit worn like 9 and 10's and has also brought back some of the cosmetics from the classic boxes.

On a side note, I'm assuming that there is going to be a new interior as well as a new sonic. Once again, some more things to look forward too, haha.

Overall, I look forward to seeing the new series next year and wish Jodie the best of luck.

However, we need to watch the Christmas special first, Twice Upon A Time, featuring David Bradley as the 1st Doctor! I'm looking forward to that too, haha. It's looking amazing from the trailers and it looks as if John Smith VFX may have done some of his amazing work for the show.
